Stanway c1900 –c1920
A comprehensive history of what was then still a semi rural parish during the period leading up to and through WW1. Not concerned with the war itself, the work describes the parish the men who served grew up in and the effect of the conflict on that community.
There is a detailed overview of the parish, including details on the Water Tower, Small Pox Hospital, the Villa, Schools, Churches, Farms, Employment and Social Life. Each house then standing is identified along with those occupants who could be traced. The effect of the war, the Stanway Army Camp and the men who served are detailed, including tales of unwittingly aiding German prisoners, selling black market meat and the local horse that served and survived.
Finally, those men who made the ultimate sacrifice are detailed along with service and family details. The book is a treasure trove of information for those interested in Stanway or the people who inhabited the village during the early part of the 20th century.
